approve: 指对某事物认可或赞成,为最广义的字

commend: 普通指长辈或上级对晚辈、部属表示赞扬,为比approve更正式的用语

The mayor commended the brave firemen.

endorse: 除表approve之外并有积极支持、支持之意

sanction: 除含有approve之意外,且有正式支持、授权之意
