stay: 指继续停留于某地,为最普通的字

Let's stay here till he appears.

remain: 尤指维持或不改变状态,或暗示纵使别人离去,自己仍然留下来

Nobody but he remained at home.

wait: 指为等待某人或某事而stay

Wait for me at the station.

tarry, linger: 皆指过了出发或预定的时间还留下来, linger尤指依依不舍

We tarried there another day.

They lingered after the show was over.

sojourn: 指暂时滞留某地

We sojourned in Paris for a week.
